STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Ambassadors Group at Horndean Technology College

The Horndean Technology College Group was established in 1995. They participate in STEM events and activities at the College and help to maintain links between the College and local industry and associated proffessions. The group members are currently all professional engineers.

Who are STEM Ambassadors?

The group members are volunteers with an interest in Science, Engineering, Technology or Mathematics who are willing to work with schools, teachers and students to stimulate and inspire interest in these subjects. What is important is that they are enthusiastic about STEM subjects and can communicate their interest to young people.

The STEM initiative is funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and is supported by the Department of Education. In Hampshire the scheme is administered by INTECH at Morn Hill in Winchester.

What does the group do?

Examples of the type of activity with which they can assist include:

Helping with classroom projects within specific areas of expertise.
Attending careers fairs and giving careers talks.
Facilitating and mentoring groups on specific projects.
Bringing an industrial perspective to STEM subjects and projects.
Supporting out-of-school activities such as after school clubs, challenges and competitions.

The members may be practicing as scientists, engineers or technologists in a company or they may be people with a background and interest in those areas.
