Welcome to the Music Department Web pages. We are a very busy and vibrant area within the college.
Within the department we have a dedicated team of teaching and support staff, including eleven specialist instrumental staff.
Extra curricular music is very popular with yearly productions, an annual summer concert and an 'Arts Showcase'. We offer several opportunities to perform as an ensemble, with a Swing Band, Steel Pans Group, Brass Ensemble, Vocalise (singing group), Woodwind Society, Samba Band, Orchestra and String Group. Our students have the opportunity to work with visiting artists such as ‘The Prince of Wales’ division army band and Taiko and Samba drumming. Links with the community are very strong and our musicians often play at local events and schools.
We have excellent facilities with three fully equipped teaching rooms, five practice rooms and a technology teaching room. Housed within the department is a professional recording studio and rehearsal space known as The Live room. The department also makes use of the excellent performance facilities of Barton Hall, which is part of the college campus.
Technology is really important in the Music department and at present we have dedicated music computers in our learning studios running various sequencing, recording and music notation software. All our teaching rooms are equipped with data projectors.
At KS3, students study a range of musical styles, genres and traditions, including Film Music, African Drumming, Samba, STOMP, Musicals, Marches and 'World of Pop'.
At KS4 we run highly successful GCSE and BTEC courses with regular performance opportunities for these students. Many of our students go on to study music at higher levels.
