Mentoring

About the programme

Students are nominated by Tutors/Year Leaders/Lead Mentors or other professionals in order to support them with their studies and academic progress at HTC.

The overview of the programme and reasons for nomination are included in the attached document ‘Mentoring Overview’.

Mentors are professionals that are amongst the Teaching and Support Staff at the College and are allocated to students with care and consideration.  The motivation behind the student is key here and the team of Mentors in each Year Group are very good at support, setting of goals and intervention to drive progress with the students.

Aims of the Academic Mentoring Programme

  • To identify barriers to learning and offer strategies to overcome them.
  • To provide a key figure in the student’s academic development, performance and progress.
  • To provide an additional level of individual encouragement, support and guidance to as many students as possible.
  • To provide a link between tutees, Subject Teachers, parents and other resources within the College.
  • To set targets with students that are:
    • Specific.
    • Simple (small steps lead to big achievement).
    • Realistic.
    • Supported (the tutee needs to know how to do it, not just what to do).
    • Measurable (in the sense that positive reinforcement can follow).

What improvement may I see from my Child after mentoring?

Mentors will summarise the mentoring process in a completion letter to you and this will contain goals for the student to work on.

Below are some of the comments received from students in evaluations:

“I am more independant and able to plan my work more easily now I have been mentored.”

“I am more confident in asking staff and other students for help.”

“Since starting mentoring I can stay on task in lessons and am more mature.”

Each child receives tailored support sessions and so each experience is different.

If you wish to know more about the program then please email your child’s Year Leader.
