Introduction

Welcome to the HTC Gifted & Talented Section

Here we will provide useful information about this positive, educational scheme for those students who perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels.

These pages have been developed to give an insight into our policies, events that have taken place, department audits, pictures, links and more.

So who are the Gifted and Talented?

The DCSF defines Gifted and Talented (G&T) students as 'Children and young people with one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop those abilities'.

It is suggested by the DCSF that one should use 'gifted' as a term to denote academic ability and 'talented' to denote special ability in the arts or sport. An able/gifted/talented student will show significant talent or ability in one or more of these areas:

  • Physical talent
  • Artistic or musical talent
  • Mechanical ingenuity
  • Leadership
  • High intelligence creativity

All children, including G&T, have a right to a challenging and appropriate education. There have been far too many instances of G&T students being left unfulfilled, bored, under challenged or frightened to use their abilities for fear of peer pressure. Those of us in education have to ensure that G&T students have sufficient opportunities to use their abilities and are encouraged to excel. So what are the necessary steps for effective provision? The list below indicates not only what is required but in fact highlights what we as a College are doing:

  • An understanding of the theory
  • A whole College policy
  • Departmental Policies and Procedures
  • Resourcing
  • Appointed coordinator
  • Identification of students
  • Classroom strategies
  • Extra-curricular provision
  • Monitoring and Evaluation

Of course we are concerned with those who score highly in IQ terms, are intelligent or clever. However, we should also be concerned with:

  • Sporting abilities.
  • Musical talent.
  • Dramatic talent.
  • Innovative designers.
  • Creativity.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Organisational ability.
  • Mechanical ingenuity.

All of the students at HTC are given the opportunity to fulfil their potential. All departments offer extra curricular workshops to accommodate the able child. HTC also organise events such as Robo-Soccer, Mission Mars, Krypton Factor and the highly successful Summer School.
