Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions that usually happen. Hopefully the answers will give you some insight into Year 7.

  1. Where do you go for break?
    You can go to the Cafe, hang around outside or go to the library.
  2. Who do you ask for help when you are lost?
    You can ask Student Support Services, teachers or other students.
  3. How much technology do you get to use?
    You get to use lots of technology at HTC.
  4. What subjects will I be doing?
    You will study: English, Maths, Science, DT, PE, IT, Art, History, Geography, MFL, Music, Drama, RS and PSHE.
  5. How much homework do you get?
    You will get about 5 projects per half term.
  6. How much is the food in the canteen?
    Food varies from 40p - £1.40.
  7. How long is each lesson?
    You lessons will be 55 minutes long.
  8. What sports do you do in PE?
    Badminton, tennis, football, rugby, athletics, basketball, hockey, cricket and dance.
  9. What is Student Support Services for?
    Student Support Services are there to help and support you.
  10. Where is the Year Leader's office?
    You will find the Year Leader's office in A Block.
  11. What achievements can you get?
    Merits, positive referals, film afternoons, 100% attendance certificate, Gold, Silver and Bronze merit certificates.
  12. How big is the College?
    It seems big, but once you get used to it, it feels like your junior school.
  13. What are merits?
    Merits are stamps that you get in your lessons if you have worked hard and tried your best.
  14. How many people are in your tutor group?
    Tutor groups have between 25 and 30 students.
  15. What are planners used for?
    Planners are used to help ensure you stay organised but also so you can write down your lesson objectives. They also let your parents see how you are doing at College.
  16. Do you work with students in the opposite band?
    When you are placed in your tutor you will be split into A band and B Band. A and B band never work together.
  17. What do you get for collecting merits?
    You can get badges and certificates. If your tutor group collects the most merits then you can win the reward afternoon.
  18. Do you still have Assembly?
    Yes you do have assembly. You have assembly once a week.
  19. What does each colour of report card mean?
    Red is behaviour, Orange is same day detention, Yellow is progress and Green is attendance.
  20. What trips do you get to go on?
    There are lots of trips including the Year 7 Residential, science day trips and geography trips.
  21. What extracurricular clubs are there to do?
    There are lots of clubs that you can do. You will be given a brochure with them all in at the start of term.
